There are quite a few things to do at Pays Basque during the Christmas period! In this article, we'll go over some obvious and not-so-obvious family activities to enjoy this year.

The great parade of Olentzero

In the streets of Saint-Jean-de-Luz: a story mixing mythology, tradition and Christmas magic. A show that will amaze young and old.

A character from Basque mythology, Olentzero is a charcoal burner who comes down from the mountain at the winter solstice to announce the change of season and the return of light. In his bag, he carries coal announcing this return. For Christians, Olentzero comes down from the mountain to announce the birth of Jesus.


Christmas markets

Like everywhere in France, the Basque Christmas markets are festive, lively, and worth a trip with the family to discover local specialties and creators.

Here is a selection of those who are in the Basque Country every year:


The Arcangues Christmas Market brings together around forty traders with seasonal products, gift ideas, and decorative items.


The city of Bayonne creates the magic of Christmas with more illuminations, Christmas trees in the streets, and appropriate entertainment.


The traditional end-of-year events at Biarritz are very beautiful. Santa Claus will meet the people of Biarrot by traveling through the neighborhoods from December 19 to 24, and the streets will be lit up until January 4.


Last year (2020) the City of Hendaye organized its first Christmas decoration competition. The most beautiful balconies, windows, houses, gardens and shop windows decorated during the 2020 Christmas holiday period were rewarded. To see for Christmas 2021..


Ice Skating

The ice rink of the bar in Anglet is a perfect place to enjoy ice skating with family or friends during the Christmas period.

Escape You

Dare to cross the doors of the escape game, Escape You, located in Anglet (Basque Country), near Bayonne and Biarritz.

It's a role-playing game where the rule is to exit a room decorated according to the theme, within a given time.
You are accompanied by a game master who will help you (or not) from the outside.

Not recommended for claustrophobics!
