History

Located between Bidart and Hendaye, Saint Jean de Luz is an authentic port city which has seduced its inhabitants and visitors for centuries. Falling under the spell of this city, Louis XIV alias the Sun King, decided to choose Saint Jean de Luz as the host city for his marriage royal. It is also the great Napoleon III who often walked in Saint Jean de Luz, and by noting the damage caused by a storm in 1854, he decided to build the dikes in the bay. Thanks to him swimming is calm and pleasant!

The economy of Saint Jean de Luz has humble origins and was originally based on the fishing industry, but by the end of the XNUMXth century Saint Jean de Luz had grown into an upscale seaside resort revered by the French and Spanish aristocracy. Since the second half of the XNUMXth century, the city has mainly subsisted on luxury and tourism markets, but the influence of fishing is still very much alive. Saint Jean de Luz is particularly known for its excellent line hake and bluefin tuna, among a variety of other local fish.
